The Haryana Government decided to set up a Separate
Directorate of Women and Child Development to streamline the activities in
different sectors of social welfare and to give much needed impetus to the
holistic development of women and children. The Social Welfare Department was
bifurcated in two Directorates namely Directorate of Social Defence and Security
( now known as Directorate of Social Justice and Empowerment) and the
Directorate of Women and Child Development vide notification No. 79-SW I/92
dated 10th February,1992. The Directorate of Women and Child Development is
functioning w.e.f. 1-4-92. The schemes of Women wing of Development Department,
Haryana alongwith its staff at Headquarter/District/ Block level was merged in
the Directorate of Women and Child Development. Set up of the Directorate of
Social Defence and Security and Directorate of Women and Child Development was
made vide notification No. 811-SW(I)-92 dated 30th March, 1992.
In its capacity as a nodal agency looking after the
advancement of women and children, the Department formulates plans, policies and
programmes and coordinates the efforts of both government and non-governmental
organizations working in the field of women and child development. The
Department and its constituents organizations work in close co-operation with
the social organizations and international agencies like UNICEF, World Bank,
UNFPA etc. to achieve the goals of development of women and children. The
Department is implementing various schemes for overall development of women and
children under state sector, central sector and with assistance of international
agencies.
