India
has the second largest child population in the world and this segment of the
population is our most important human resource.The future of our nation depends upon the kind of
opportunities we create and provide to our children.
The Government of India has initiated several measures for proper
development of this important
resources.
India
has a rich heritage of humanitarianism. Thousands of voluntary organizations and
individuals are contributing to the national efforts to lay the foundation of a
healthier, more prosperous and productive generation of future Indians.
In order to further strengthen voluntary action in our country, which is
one of the most powerful instruments of social transformation, it is essential
to create awareness amongst the millions of people of our villages. Various
awards constituted by Government of India for Children are:

FOR SERVICE TO CHILDREN
In
order to encourage the voluntary sector, the Government of India, in 1979,
started a scheme of giving ‘National Award for Child welfare’ to deserving
institutions and individuals for their outstanding performance in the field of
child development and welfare, this scheme was started, with a view to give
recognition to such voluntary action.

NATURE OF
AWARD:
i) The Award for every individual shall consist of Cash Prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- and a citation.
ii) The award to each institution shall consist a cash prize of Rs. 3,00,000/-
and a citation.
PROCEDURE FOR
SELECTION:
Initially the selection will be made from amongst individuals and
institutions in a State by a State Level Screening committee headed by Financial
Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Women and Child Development Department.
For inviting applications from eligible individuals/ institutions, press notes
are given in newspapers apart from district level publicity by the respective
Deputy Commissioners. Application forms are available with the Programme
Officers ( District Level ICDS cell )/ Deputy Commissioners free of cost.
CRITERIA FOR
SELECTION:
FOR
INSTITUTIONS:
Institution should be those that are not entirely Government funded.
They could be Government aided or otherwise.
Institutions should have been in the field of child welfare for some
years and should have a good performance in the field.
FOR INDIVIDUALS:
The individuals to be selected from the award should have worked for the
cause of children for some years. Paid
officers of the institutions will not be eligible for selection.
The sole basis of selection will be the quality of work performed by the
individual for the cause of children and its significance of the cause.
DATE OF
AWARDS:
The awards will be announced on Universal Children Day –
14 November
every year.

NATIONAL CHILD AWARD FOR
EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
The department of Women & Child Development, Govt. of India has
instituted an award called the “National Child Award for
Exceptional Achievement” to give recognition to children with
exceptional abilities and outstanding caliber in different fields such as
academics, arts, culture and sports etc.

Award for the child with exceptional achievement shall consist of:-
(A)
Gold Medal – 1 (One)
(One child on all India basis)
(i)
a cash prize of Rs. 20,000
(ii)
a citation and certificates, and
(iii)
a Gold Medal
(B)
Silver Medals – 35
(Thirty five) (One child from each State)
(i) Award money @ Rs. 10,000/- for each awardee
(ii) a citation and certificate for each awardee, and
(iii) a Silver Medal for each awardee
SELECTION PROCEDURE
:
The applications/ nominations are invited from the eligible applicants
from the state through publicity by giving press note in news papers and through
Deputy Commissioners. The
nomination are selected through a State Level Screening Committee for
recommendation to Govt. of India.
Application forms are available with Programme Officers
(District
Level ICDS cells) and the offices of Deputy Commissioners free of cost. However,
the specimen of the application form is given at annexure.
CRITERIA OF SELECTION
:
(i)
The child is to be selected for the Award should have shown unusual
talent and exceptional achievement in any field including academics, arts,
culture and sports etc.
(ii)
Age certificate
(Date of Birth) duly attested by a Gazetted Govt. office may be attached.
(iii)
Tributes/ traits which are claimed to be possessed by the child
extraordinary or exceptional should be either reported in the press, or have
been tested by experts in the field. It
should also be possible to subject the claim to a objective test.

RAJIV GANDHI MANAV SEVA AWARD
FOR SERVICE TO CHILDREN
The department of Women & Child Development, Govt. of India has
instituted an award to give nation’s recognition to voluntary action in the
field of child welfare known as “Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva Award for Service to
Children”. This award is to honor
an individual who makes outstanding contribution towards to service to children
including the care of children with disabilities.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION FOR
INDIVIDUAL :

officers of the institutions will not be eligible for selection. The sole basis of selection will be quality of work performed by the
individual for the cause of children and its significance for the cause.
